Palm oil is a vegetable oil found in 1 in 10 supermarket products. But its production causes rainforest destruction, human rights abuses and threatens the survival of wildlife such as the orang-utan and Sumatran tiger.
Harrow Friends of the Earth teamed up with activists from Harrow Student Action Group in a number of protests outside Tesco in central Harrow, calling for Tesco, as the largest UK supermarket, to source their palm oil sustainably.
We are also calling on the government to strengthen the law so that:
- Directors are legally required to report on their social and environmental impacts;
- Directors are legally obliged to minimise any damage their company does to local communities and the environment;
- People overseas who are harmed by the activities of a UK company are able to take action against them in a UK court.
Gareth Thomas Quizzed on Palm Oil
Nov 2005: Our very own Gareth Thomas MP (Harrow West) has answered parliamentary questions on the Palm Oil issue. He referred to a DEFRA study, which calls for a clear government policy on sustainable commodities, but talks only of voluntary measures, and "threatening legislation".
